Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs met in music secondary school in Melbourne, Australia, drawn together by a shared love of songs with no boundaries or expectations. The duo, now both 24, have since unveiled three EPs, but it’s their debut album, Stadium Cake, released in July 2016, that truly showcases their uniquely compelling collaboration. As formerly trained classical and jazz musicians , Oh Pep! found common ground in folk music and then proceeded to take that genre to a place it's never been before.
Oh Pep! have been bringing their recordings to the stage for years, first trekking around Australia and then touring internationally since early 2015. They've performed at CMJ, SXSW, The Great Escape (UK) and Nashville's Americana Music Festival, for Seattle's KEXP and NPR's Tiny Desk. Their harmonies are sweet, with lyrics that are thoughtful, deep, funny and poetic.
Stadium Cake (2016)
Oh Pep!'s debut album 'Stadium Cake' is the culmination of years of friendship and collaboration between Pepita Emerichs and Olivia Hally.
Recorded in Nova Scotia, Canada, Stadium Cake is an indie-pop masterpiece with the DNA of a folk record. Mandolin, acoustic guitar and violin meld with electronic instruments and programmed beats accompanying Olivia Hally's gorgeously melodic voice. "Doctor Doctor," the album's first single, is a pop song with elements of the unexpected, revealing the band's interest in experimental and occasionally dissonant melodies. A sense of light and dark stitches together the tapestry of Stadium Cake, continually bringing a sense of tension to each song.
Released in November 2015, Oh Pep’s EP ‘Living’ utilises back the complexity and artistry of their classical and jazz backgrounds to create their own sparkling take on indie-pop and folk. The EP was lavished with praise; NPR saying “Filled with magic… one of the most promising voices in Americana”. Barely Dressed Records is the world-wide exclusive manufacturer and seller of Living on vinyl.
